Northern Lights!

This past Tuesday there was a major solar flare. Even though there have been quite a few over this past year or two, this one was HUGE! What does this mean for us in Alaska? A great showing of the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. Now this doesn’t mean that those of us in Alaska get an automatic viewing of this spectacular display of lights. Many factors, one of which includes cloud cover is often will make or break being able to see them. Living in Anchorage, we usually get that stupid cloud cover most of the time, even when there is a good solar flare. This past Tuesday though all the conditions were in our favor. I usually have to pull my husband’s teeth to get out that late at night (we are talking at a minimum heading out the door at 10 p.m. if not later!). He took pity on me though this time I guess since have been on bedrest for quite awhile now and we took the drive north. We were hoping to make it to Talkeetna, but he had to work the next day so we only made it to Big Lake. That was good enough though to be able to see the bright green lights in the sky! It’s definitely a landscape/nature photographer’s dream to be able to photograph this phenomena, which is no easy task. We’ve tried before when we could see minor displays in Anchorage but this was our first major practice session. While we weren’t in the best location, we still had a pretty good showing. I also got to use one of my new Christmas toys too! Daniel got me a blueSLR adapter which arrived just in time for this event! I got to stay in the car pretty toasty and warm while my poor husband got out in the -25 plus degree cold to set up the cameras. Did I mention how much I love my husband and business partner! It took a few practice shots, but we finally got some fairly decent shots for our first time out. Now I am addicted and can’t wait to be able to go out further! Here is one of my favorites so far *Edit* I haven’t had a chance to publish this till tonight and as it turns out there is major activity again this weekend so wish Dan and I luck that we get better shots this time around!

It’s a boy!

Last weekend my friend Leslie (see maternity pics in last post) went into labor on Friday. I was so excited to be on the “call” list to know when she went in to the hospital. Well, she wasn’t far along, but at the hospital nonetheless. Weather here has been crazy so to send a pregnant woman home even remotely in labor I’m sure was not the wisest of ideas so they kept her there. Things where progressing pretty well until around 9ish. Still no baby! Now keep in mind baby was a week early and they had a strong suspicion the baby was going to come early anyways, so all this didn’t seem out of the ordinary. Leslie stayed in good spirits the whole way through and we were all hoping for an 11-11-11 baby. However, baby had decided he’d stay and torture mama for a bit longer. 24 hours later he finally decided to make his appearance! I wasn’t able to get there over the weekend due to some other issues that came up, but had to be there on Monday anyways so I went to go see them for just a little bit before they were discharged. Here’s a quick picture of baby Blake! Oh, and to top it off…the 10 lb baby they thought they were going to have didn’t happen. He was only 6 lbs 14 oz! He’s so cute and little and has the prettiest complexion I’ve ever seen on a baby! Can’t wait to do his newborn pics this weekend, I got a couple sneak peek shots but for some reason the computer gods hate me today and won’t let me upload them so you’ll just have to wait till next week!

Boy or Girl?

Boy or Girl?

Leslie and Leonard have decided not to find out till the baby is born if they are having a little Blake or Lainey for their first baby! Found the perfect building blocks for this shot because it came complete with the ? They were great sports as we tried to figure out how to balance all the blocks across their arms!

Leslie, Leonard and Baby Dauphin

When I found out that my friend Leslie was pregnant with her very first baby, I immediately offered to do her maternity pictures. She is due very close to Thanksgiving so I jokingly asked if I could paint a turkey on her tummy! She actually said yes! Well, nearly nine months later today was the day of my very first maternity shoot! A new area of photography and already out of the gate I got a challenge…the couple has decided to keep it a secret as to what they will be having close to Turkey Day! This very fun challenge got my creative juices flowing in a whole new way! I definitely do like doing maternity shoots! Here’s a sneak peek at a few of my favorite shots of the day. I want to thank Leslie and Leonard let me be a part of this very special time of their lives! Oh….and we decided to go with a pumpkin painting to cover Halloween and Thanksgiving 🙂 Also, a big thank you to Anna Maria Olson, a good friend of mine and a very talented face painter and entertainer who painted Leslie’s oh so cute belly bump!
